January 19 (Renewables Now) – Japanese carmaker Nissan Motor Co Ltd (TYO:7201) on Thursday launched Nissan Energy Solar, an offering to UK homeowners that combines solar panels with an energy storage system.
The product, unveiled at the Nissan Electric Ecosystem Experience on the Spanish island of Tenerife, includes also a home energy management system. Nissan said this is the first time it brings a solar and energy storage solution to the market. The company is developing similar offers for other countries in Europe.
The carmaker said the product is designed to help UK homeowners reduce energy bills, become more grid independent and live more sustainably. It will allow householders to use their excess solar energy during the night, including to charge Nissan LEAF and e-NV200 vehicles, and on non-sunny days.
In the UK, the company has a plant in Sunderland than produces several models, among which Nissan LEAF. It started producing lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EV) in 2012.
